Trumpeter Russell Whitehead is a musician from the prairies, where the wide open skies and endless stretches of land have inspired a poetry all its own. The music on this recording — by two prairie-based Canadian composers (Saskatchewan’s Roger Deegan and Alberta’s Malcolm Forsyth) and American Eric Ewazen have the influence of those vistas to them: lyrical, expansive and honest.

For his Arktos Recordings debut, Mr. Whitehead, one of western Canada’s busiest freelance players and Acting Principal Trumpet of the Edmonton Symphony in 2004/05, is joined by one of western Canada’s most noted accompanists, Sylvia Shadick-Taylor.
